What is a Plastic Extruder?
A plastic extruder is a machine used in the plastic extrusion process, where plastic raw materials (usually granules or powders) are melted and forced through a die to form continuous shapes such as pipes, sheets, films and profiles. The extruder uses heat, pressure and mechanical force to melt and shape the plastic into the desired shape.
Key components of a plastic extruder:
- Hopper: First, feed the plastic raw material into the entry point of the extruder.
- Barrel: to a long heated cylinder where the material is melted and processed.
- Screw: The rotating shaft inside the barrel then pushes the plastic material forward, gradually melting and mixing it.
- Die: The tool at the end of the extruder is used to shape the molten plastic into a specific shape, such as a tube, sheet, or film.
- Cooling system: Congratulations, you have reached this step. You can let the plastic leave the mold and cool and solidify the shape.
Types of plastic extruders:
- Single-screw extruders: A single screw inside the barrel rotates to melt and extrude the plastic.
- Twin-screw extruders: Two intermeshing screws rotate, which allows for better mixing and compounding of materials.
